Abstract

Many firms and businesses have started to participate in sustainable product development due to the increasingly strict regulations imposed by various legislative authorities. Furthermore, some are driven by the potential marketing opportunities brought by green products. However, the use of proper framework to guide companies in fulfilling this purpose is still lacking. This thesis reports a research that develops a framework that can provide guidance to employees of various department in an organization with an intention to produce sustainable product. This is done by utilizing Axiomatic Design principles in three key areas e.g. design for end-of-life management, supply chain, and manufacturing to come out with development solution that brings least environmental impact. Various case studies are being presented in this thesis to demonstrate application of the design model in the said areas. An industrial application is also included to validate the feasibility of implementing the proposed framework in real life situation, involving actual employees of a household appliance manufacturing company. The axiomatic framework was able to help the product development company in selecting and identifying the most suitable design alternative that fulfills customer needs and at the same time, allows more efficient end-of-life management. Moreover, selection of green supplier was conducted with the help of quantitative and qualitative analysis of suppliers' environmental capabilities using Axiomatic Design principles. Likewise, the approach was used selection of sustainable manufacturing processes. Finally, conclusions are followed by a summary of the findings from the research project and critical discussion that provides learned lessons and recommendations.
