Abstract

The proposed work will deal with investigations on hydrodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of a circular tube and tube banks with integral downstream splitter plates in cross flow of air in a rectangular duct. The design or high performance cross-flow heat exchangers require high heat transfer and yet without the proportionate increase drag. Wake splitters (longitudinal fins) attached to the downstream section of an object will supposedly modify the boundary layer over that object to obtain the desired effect. This however can only be activated only under appropriate operating and design considerations. Hence the research proposed here will involve extensive experimental and numerical studies to study and analyze the physics of the flow and heat transfer of the device. As an outcome the fundamental understanding achieved in this study will be put fourth to determine the appropriate conditions and design parameters necessary to improve the performance of cross-flow heat exchangers in terms of fan power, heat transfer increment, reduction in loss of availability, increment of tube stiffness and reduced tube vibrations.
