Abstract

This study aims to investigate student's perception towards a few aspects concerning the hostel accormodation, and their relationship to the academic performance of the Form 5 students of Sekolah Menengah Teknik Pasir Mas, Kelantan. 82 students were involved in this study which represent about 30% of the school's Form 5 population during the year 2002 who live in the hostel. Among the focus of the study is to identify students opinions and perceptions on a few aspects of the hostel system including the facilities provided, the rules and regulations, students psycology and social experiences, and also the environment within the school compound. This study also examine the academic performance of the student and how that performance can be related to the aspects studied. Data collected was analyzed using the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and correlation test through 'SPSS' (Statistical Packege For The Social Science) software. The study reveals that most of the students generally satisfy with the existing hostel's facilities provided. Most of them also did not face any major problems regarding the rules and regulations implemented upon them. They seem to be independent, able to adapt to the environment, and have a positive atitude toward study. The study also show that most studenst who live in school hostel gain a relatively notable improvement in their academic achivement. Based on the results of the study that has been conducted, it shows that there is strong relationship between the aspect of students psychology and social experiences with their academic performance. While, physical facilities and learning environment aspects show average relationship. In the aspects of the rules and regulations, study shows that there is a weak relationship with the academic performance of the students. Nevertheless, based on the positive coeficient value for all these four aspects, it shows that relationship do exist between the aspects of hostel accomodation and the students' academic performance.
