Abstract

Educators are aware of individual differences in students, and are able in a number of situations diagnose individual learner difficulties. Yet, in most classrooms, students are still locked into the same instructional sequence with the same learning materials. Individualized instruction may appear to be an easy solution. These methods are flexible by optional and using of learning resources and it will give the student more chances to continue their learning process. According to this purpose, self-instructional modules (SIM) in the topic staircase were produced to enhance Quantity Surveyor's student in "taking off." The objectives of this study are to develop self-instructional modules (SIM) and implement a modular approach with that performance can improve level of understanding among student and to identifY its usefulness. One experiment study has been done. The instruments used in this study are "Assessment Forni" and "Test." The results of this study have shown that mean of "post-test" was very high at 20.81 compare to mean of "pre-test" just 11. 54 which increased about 9.27. Besides that, value of mean average for level of usefulness assessment for "self-instructional modules in Staircase (SIMIS)" is 4.13. It is clearly approved that SIM produced are appropriate as learning and teaching resources. From this study, three kinds of suggestion have suggested. The suggestions are all polytechnic's lecturers should have skills on how to develop modules, and developed self-instmctional modules in all subject which able in polytechnics. Teaching-learning process based on self-instructional modules also should be encouraged in polytechnics.
