Abstract

Hierarchical Linear Model with three levels was used in this study to examine the student achievement for the first semester student in 2003/2004 academic session because it considered the variability between programmes and schools in Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). The data consisted of 1088 students. Students level was a first level, second level was programmes and the third level was schools. For the overall results, it showed that the female student have a better achievement rather than male student. Non-bumiputera student showed the better achievement than bumiputera achievement. This analysis was divided by two type if data that is the data which included all the 22 programmes in FST. The other data was without Actuarial Science programme. It is because mean Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for the Actuarial Science was higher than the other mean CGPA for the other programmes. Explanatory variables for races and ethnic were significantly different. Meanwhile variables for size programme and percentage of female student for each programme were significantly different when the explanatory variables for the second level were included in the model. Analysis for data without Actuarial Science programme showed that variables for races and ethnics were significantly different. But when the explanatory variables for the second level included in the model showed that only the variable for percentage of female student in the programme was significantly different. Model which included all the explanatory variables showed that variables for percentage of bumiputera and percentage of female student for each school and the ratio lecturer for students become significantly different.
