Abstract
Indigenous pupils’ competency in Malaysia is still at an apprehension level and this shows that they are in need of suitable teaching and learning approaches that are able to cater their learning needs. Therefore, this research is to discuss the impact of nurturing the Malaysia Forest School elements (MFSe) onto the Indigenous pupils’ science competency. This research is using the collaboration methods between qualitative and quantitative (mix method) and quasi-experimental designed which involves 33 pupils in the treatment group and 30 pupils in the controlled group. Document analysis, expert interview and reliability analysis of Fleiss Kappa are conducted to design the Indigenous Pupils’ Science Competency Indicator and MFSe. Cognitive test to measure the science knowledge, Inventory Skills to measure the science skills and survey to measure the science attitude have been distributed to identify the implications of MFSe nurtured onto the Indigenous pupils. The result from the research findings for the criteria in Indigenous Pupils’ Science Competency Indicator and MFSe identified shown a very good agreement level. The result of the finding shows that the score analysis result for the agreement level usability of Kit RIMBA is 94.67%. This shows a high usability module of the agreement level. Other than that, the research finding shows that there are significant differences for science knowledge, science skills, and science attitude during the pre and post implementation of the MFSe in the treatment group and between the treatment and controlled group. In addition, pupils of the treatment group demonstrated higher achievement than pupils of the control group. Triangulation data result also shows that the quantitative findings data is parallel with the qualitative data. This shows that the MFSe through the Kit RIMBA is effective in increasing the Indigenous pupils’ science competency.
