This report presents Fesults of the research work undertaken to develop an indoor environment quality (IEQ) index of workplace under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme, Vot No. 0275. This report contains 6 chapters which are, Introduction (Chapter I), Theory (Chapter 2), Literature Survey (Chapter 3), Methodology (Chapter 4), Results and Analysis (Chapter 5) and Conclusion (Chapter 6). Chapter 1 gives an introduction to indoor air quality and the index of air pollution, the rationale and scope of the project. The theoretical aspects of the project is presented in Chapter 2, amongst which the Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) as used in the US and the Malaysia Index Pencemaran Udara (IPLJ), Air Quality in Buildings and the parmeters of air pollutants were described . Chapter 3 gives a brief review on works of previous researchers particularly related to index of air pollution. Chapter 4 gives detail of the Methodology of the project in which the building/worlcplace selection, methods and equipments for measurement and data collection and analysis are described. Chapter 5 presents the results of measurements of air pollutant in selected laboratories expressed in the PSI and IPU indexes and also a newly derived index; the indoor environment quality (IEQ) index. Chapter 6 gives the discussion on the results and data obtained and the conclusion on the findings of the research. The level of air quality in a workplace was presented in terms of an indoor environment quality (IEQ) index. Using scale of 1 to 5 to denote the level of pollution for an individual pollutant an assuming those pollutants are additive in the mixture, the EQI for a workplace can be calculated and classified as good (0 - 5), moderate (6 - lo), unhealthy (1 1 - 15), very unhealthy (6 - 20) and hazardous (21 - 25). The Indoor Enviionment Quality (IEQ) Index or Environmental Quality Index (EQI) has been applied on two cases which were an Engineering Laboratory and a Manufacturing Plant; details of which can be found in Appendix la and lb.
