Abstract

Concern over broiler products due to use of antibiotics has prompted a study to produce free antibiotic chicken. This research is on the effectiveness of using a combination of effective microorganisms (EM) and Noni (Morinda citrifolia) called EMM, for broiler chickens. The research objectives were, to review effectiveness of the EMM product against growth rate, mortality and effects of its use in terms of the cost of poultry farming. There were five treatments : EMM50, EMM100, EMM200, EM and Control. The result of this study found that chicken growth for all treatments was positive. Weight of chicken samples on day 33 ranged from 1652.62 ± 138.67g (EMM50) to 1708.26 ± 133.70g (Control), while for EMM100, EMM200 and EM was 1605.29 ± 128.84g, 1562.27 ± 128.84g and 1623.63 ± 203.04g respectively. A comparison of growth rate using paired t-test analysis, showed all treatments to be significantly different (p<0.05). For example, between treatments EMM50 and Control, t=7.525; p<0.05. Comparing the average weight, the least difference was between Control and EMM50 chicken (55.63g). The highest difference was between Control and EMM200 chicken (145.90g). The mortality rate for EMM200 treatment was the highest, 14 dead chicken (9.3%) compared to Control with no death (0%). EMM50, EMM100 and EM recorded the same number of death of 10 chicken (6.67%). Based on variable factors such as the cost of antibiotics, EM and EMM the lowest cost at day 33, for treatment EMM50 was RM5.55 compared to Control at RM5.60; EM at RM5.68; EMM100 at RM5.91 and EMM200 at RM6.62. Based on the average weight of a chicken in the Control treatment and the usual market price of broilers at RM3.80/kg, the forecasted sale for chicken in this study was RM6.49 per chicken. The usual market price of organic chicken is RM5.40. Chicken in treatment EMM50, EMM100, EMM20 and EM can be assumed able to be sold as organic chicken and as such sales revenue would ranged from RM8.44 (EMM200) to RM8.92 (EMM50); for EMM100, RM8.67 and EM, RM8.77 per chicken. EMM product is capable of paving a new dimension in livestock breeding industry of green products in Malaysia
