Abstract

Multimedia software proved to help students and lecturers in teaching and learning process. This study attempts to see the effect of multimedia approach compared with conventional methods on the achievement of 57 students in Mechanical Engineering with difference cognitive style at the Polytechnic Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam. This study used a quasi-experimental design of pre and post test. A courseware entitled „Plastic‟ was develop for Materials Technology subjects. The research instrument consists of pre and post test, Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), questionnaires and multimedia software. The data was analyzed by using mean score, standard deviation, t-test and analysis of 2x2 factorial ANOVA with Statistic Package for The Social Science Version 17.0 (SPSS v 17.0). Pre and post test score were compared for the control and experimental groups and between groups of Field Independence (FI) and Field Dependence (FD). The results showed significant differences in achievement test scores of control and treatment groups. However, no significant differences in test scores between FI and FD students. There were also no significant interaction between control and treatment group FI and FD groups of students. Thus, while constructing the multimedia teaching package, a lecturer must consider the psychological factors of students for the teaching and learning in the classroom. Based on learning theory, psychological factors was important because it can enhance the positive attitude towards the subject.
