The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and the Single-Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) are well-known systems. OFDMA has been chosen as downlink transmission technique in LTE standards for its robustness in the presence of multipath signal propagation and high spectral efficiency. However, SC-FDMA has been chosen for uplink channels to its advantages such as the low Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and the use of frequency domain equalizers (FDE). The FDMA systems suffer from several drawbacks such as peak power and I/Q imbalacne problems. These problems introduce several interference types and thus degrade the system performance. As a result, there is a need to enhance the performance of these systems. Studying and comparing the performance of the FDMA systems in the presence of the PAPR and I/Q imbalance problems are presented in this project. This project presents an improved Discrete Sine Transform (DST)-based FDMA systems in which the DST is used to generate orthogonal subcarriers as Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). Simulation results show that the DST-SC-FDMA system provides better BER performance than the DST-OFDMA and DFT SC-FDMA systems, while the complexity of the transmitter and receiver is slightly increased. Moreover, for the nonlinear amplification problem, it was concluded that the PAPR of the DST-SC-FDMA system is lower than that of the DST-OFDMA system and for the I/Q imbalance problem, the DST-OFDMA system provide more robustness against imbalances in phase and amplitude. On the other hand, The I/Q imbalace problem effects on the DST-SC-FDMA system are more than the DST-OFDMA system.
