Abstract

Cognitive and affective aspects of learning are the effective recipes in producing competent students in higher learning institutions. The two aspects are vital to produce undergraduates which posses high self-credibility in analytical skill, problem solving, creative thinking, communication, work in group and hands-on skill. This study has evaluated the learning experiences of engineering students at KUiTTHO. This study explores the perceptions of students learning experiences from the two aspects of cognitive and affective learning. Respondents for this study involved 155 final semester students from civil, electrical dan mechanical engineering of engineering students, which were chosen randomly (51, 57 and 47 students respectively). By using questionnaires, the evaluations are based on the perception of respondents towards the learning experiences. The data collected were also collected from interview session with several respondents to identify the indicators of engineering students' experiences learning. The data collected were then analyzed using SPSS version 11.0 which were represented by mean scores, standard deviation and null hypothesis used ANOVA and paired t-test. The findings show that the overall quality of learning experiences for engineering students at KUiTTHO were at a moderate level (mean = 3.55). As for the learning experiences in cognitive and affective aspects, they were also at the same level (mean = 3.48 and 3.61 respectively). There is a significant difference between learning experiences in cognitive and affective aspects in students experiences learning at KUiTTHO. However, there is no significant difference between the civil, electrical and mechanical engineering department in students' experiences learning at KUiTTHO. The researchers suggest that the institution should take a responsibility to improve the engineering students' experiences learning in cognitive dan affective aspects. The institution should also improve the infrastructure and accommodation in KUiTTHO to enhance the quality of engineering student experiences learning.
