Abstract

Insulator is one of the main component in high voltage transmission line that being used as the holder of overhead lines as well as to prevent current flowing to the steel tower to ground (grid). The insulator that mostly used in transmission line is glass type insulator and the arrangement in string. This thesis has been made to analyse insulator performance related to the voltage distribution in the string. Besides the voltage distribution has been analyse through three difference condition; perfect insulator condition, broken disc insulator and lastly insulator with small size. From the observation, all the conditions proposed have significant effect on voltage distribution. Simulation of insulator by using FEMM version 4.2 software shown that the maximum value of voltage distribution was found to be at region of disc insulator. Based on the voltage distribution of broken disc insulator, maximum voltage drop is occurred at broken disc insulator. The performance of broken insulator is related with their broken disc position. Therefore, the string efficiency of broken insulator for case 1 has higher efficiency followed by case 2, case 3 and case 4 with efficiency of 27.08%, 27.01%, 26.97%, 25.40% respectively. For small disc insulator, the performance of small disc insulator is also related with their position. Therefor, the string efficiency of small disc insulator for case 1 has higher efficiency followed by case 2, case 3 and case 4 with efficiency of 27.71%, 27.69%, 27.68%, 27.50% respectively. As conclusion, the string efficiency of the broken disc insulator and small size of disc insulator have slightly lower than perfect disc insulator. The broken insulator and small size disc insulator is practically to be used in transmission line system due to their efficiency almost same with perfect disc insulator.
