Abstract

In the Malaysian innovation system, most of the key industrial players have taken the initiative to use scientific research outputs to commercialize products. Higher education institutions and research institutes have mainly focused on higher education and basic research. However, throughout the years, there have been some economic changes, where the world has seen a decrease in the competitiveness of pioneering industries, including in Malaysia. Malaysia has made some efforts to increase their economic value by diffusing its scientific knowledge, especially the development of research outputs by higher education institutions and research institutes or by innovative finns, to a much wider sphere of industrial activities through the process of technology transfer and commercialization. One of the strategies introduced by the government of Malaysia is the commercialization of innovations produced by higher education institutions or government-linked research institutes or private research institutes by using the technology transfer process. Thus, the relationship between the innovation provider and the innovation acquiring firm is very important in ensuring that the commercialization performance is successful.
