Abstract

Due to rapid depletion of fuel and environment concerns, it has caused interests from the expertise in the study of the factors that affects mixture formation, performance and emission of internal combustion engines. Diesel on the other hand received the most attention since diesel is used in a lot of heavy industries which is essential for the progression of the technology advancement and also the emission from it contains a lot of hazard substances. This summary paper presents the experiment conduct on the effect of intake temperature on mixture formation, performance and emission of diesel engine. To control the temperature, the air from the air compressor is heated in the air pre-heater before injected to the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber is then analyzed by image processing and the exhaust gas will be analyzed with a gas analyzer and also AVL smoke tester with a filter paper method. B5E15 blend was used in this experiment and tested from 400K to 1200K while the pressure is from 0.1MPa to 8Mpa. The emission equivalent ratio was analyzed within 30% to 60% with respect to the input temperature. The experimental result shows that the increase of intake temperature promotes better mix formation, performance and increase of NOx release. However, the emission of CO will be reduced with the increase of intake temperature.
