Detergents are the chemical substances that are used to remove stains including grease, leftovers, rust, and other stains that are visible to fabrics. Usually detergents are consist of surfactant, builders, brighteners, enzymes, bleaching agents, suspending agents and other additives such as fragrance and coloring agents. For most detergents, builders such as sodium triphosphate (STPP) are the main component used to support surfactant in removing stains. High usage of STPP can lead to eutrophication [1] which will destroy water sources. This is due to excessive nutrient of phosphate in grey water that discharged into the drain. This excessive nutrient causes algae bloom or eutrophication which is suffocated aquatic life by blocking oxygen and light from reaching the bottom of water sources. The main objective of this project is to find an alternative way to substitute the use of STPP in detergents. In this project, the replacement of STPP by a ‘phosphate-free’ ingredient such as zeolites offers some relief to this problem. The zeolite replacement can act as softening agents as well as maintaining the water discharge quality, so that the pollution or contaminations of discharged water can be reduced with the replacement of the phosphates. The uses of zeolites in making the detergent are already common in other countries, but yet there is no such thing in Malaysia.
