Abstract

Petroleum refining generates enormous volumes of waste called petroleum sludge. This sludge is considered as a very dangerous waste due to its components which are petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals that have a cumulative effect and particular hazard towards human and the environment. This review addresses the background concept on treatment of petroleum sludge. The discussion begins with definition of petroleum sludge, which includes the characteristics of the sludge. The detailed discussion on petroleum sludge treatment includes comparison of each treatment.
