Abstract

Zhe headway between vehicles in a trafJ;c stream is one of fundamental parameter in trafic and safeg engineering applications. This study describes driver's car following headway on two-lane highways. The aims of this research are to collect, extract and collate data describing headways on two-lane highways, and to develop statistical relationships of car following headway based on observed data. Data for more than 8000 vehicles were collected using Metro Count Trafic survey equipment to record trafJic movement at three sites in Batu Pahat District. Data were extracted and analvzed using appropriate computing technique to provide data and information for impeded vehicles only. The distance headways and associated vehicles speeds were classified into vehicle following categov by vehicle gpe: car following car, car following heavy goods vehicle (HGV, HGVfollowing HGV and HGVfollowing car categories. Linear regressions models were developed to present the relationships between headway and speed Car-following interaction was studied by examining headway distributions and speed-headway relationships. The study found that observed average headway is 2 seconds. Also, a significant proportion of drivers choose to maintain relatively short heahvays while following other vehicles. The results of this study could conclude that most Malaysian drivers tend to follow the vehicles ahead closely on two-lane highway.
