Abstract

In this paper, an investigation of a new design of field excitation coil (FEC) slot arrangements namely inner FEC slot, outer FEC slot and toroidal FEC slot which employed in permanent magnet flux switching machine (PMFSM) is presented. Consequently, coil arrangement tests are carried out under no-load condition to legalize the three-phase machine operating principle including position of each armature coil phase. Furthermore, the flux interaction between permanent magnet (PM) and FEC, back emf and performances of cogging torque at various rotor positions are also investigated using 2D finite-element analysis (2D-FEA). The simulated result shows that the proposed outer FEC slot arrangement attains its lowest cogging torque output of 19.78Nm significantly 17.62% and 11.26% lower than that of inner FEC slot and toroidal FEC slot. Moreover, it may also offers less effort in terms of fabrication and FEC winding process due to the simple configuration
