Abstract

The aim of this paper is to develop an overall ovate and lanceolate leaf shape model based on the botanical textual description. For this purpose, the B-spline generative shape method (GSM) has been used. The idea is to assemble the tip, side and base of such leaves. For a given side’s geometry, the tip and the base are produced by using the GSM and the leaf shape synthesis system. Expert botanist is referred to assess the drawing results to ensure that the result is in conformity with botanical point of view. The findings show that the use of GSM produced good result except for some minor visual errors. In conclusion, the GSM is practical to model these leaves. The implication is the developed model enables botanists to check whether the textual written descriptions in the botanical text are correct and useful as an aid to determine whether botanists use terminology consistently.
