Some machine tool manufacturers are strongly proposing the cyber manufacturing system, in which it involves the integration of CNC machines with information technology. The CNC machines become accessible via the Internet and eventually the overall production operations can be managed from any remote location. This paper reviews the current practices of cyber manufacturing offered by various major CNC producers. It then presents a conceptual framework of a cyber manufacturing system (CMS) which is specifically intended to provide an economical and effective means of utilizing Internet technology to improve the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) performance. It also highlights the industrial requirements as regard to the elements to be included in the CMS from SMEs perspective.
