The implementation of an effective and efficient maintenance management system is vital if the maintenance of assets of any organisation or institution is to be managed properly. A survey was undertaken to identify a list of best practices in maintenance management of school buildings among schools in Southern Peninsular Malaysia. The study evaluated the existing maintenance management practice adopted by schools to determine whether there is a need to improve current maintenance management systems. Results showed that existing practice varied from school to school and the performance was far below best practice standards. This has led to the development of a process model to assist school administrators to evaluate and improve their existing approaches to maintenance management.
