Abstract
The success of a sustainable construction project is inextricably connected with the leadershipskills of project manager. However, project managers frequently encounter difficulties associated withleadership skills specifically during the pre-construction phase. A project manager needs to deal withdifferent disciplines of stakeholders in the pre-construction phase, thus, by improving leadership skills theymay prevent potential issues. Therefore, a model to assist project managers to improve their leadership skills in the pre-construction phase of the sustainable construction project is very much needed. This paper discusses the development process of the model of leadership skills’ improvement at the pre-constructionphase for sustainable construction projects. A literature review was carried out to explore the leadershipskills of project managers in sustainable construction projects and the existing maturity models insustainable construction. Apart from that, a questionnaire survey was conducted with project managers experienced in sustainable construction projects to identify which leadership skills are critical for project managers in the pre-construction phase of sustainable construction projects and the potential improvement that can be made. Both data from the literature review and questionnaire survey are important andcontributed to the development of the model. The purpose of this model is to assist project managers toimprove leadership skills in the pre-construction phase of the sustainable construction project. Hence, this model is expected to serve as a reference for project managers to improve leadership skills in the pre- construction phase to successfully deliver sustainable construction projects
