Abstract

Peat stabilization is possible to be enhanced by using cement and pozzolan, such as sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA). However, understanding the characteristics of SCBA is crucial for predicting the strength of peat-cement-bagasse (PCB) mixtures. The primary aim of this research study is to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the pozzolanic reaction of SCBA in stabilizing peat soil. To evaluate the ability of SCBA to stabilize peat, a series of eight mixtures were created by combining Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and SCBA. The physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of all the mixtures were meticulously examined through a series of tests including spectroscopy electron micrograph/energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM/ EDX), unconfned compressive strength (UCS) testing, and peat property testing. The test results revealed that the highest UCS value was observed in the specimen that contained 20% partial replacement of OPC with SCBA 1. This specimen was found to be 30 times stronger than untreated peat and 1.2 times stronger than the specimen containing only PC. The ideal combination of elements for creating calcium silicate hydrates and calcium alumina silicate hydrate crystals is found in the optimal mixture, known as PCB1-20. The presence of an alkaline environment plays a crucial role in enhancing the strength of various mixtures. Upon analyzing and estimating the E50pcb (a measure of stifness) versus the experimental E50pcb, the results show a remarkable degree of efectiveness. The estimation technique provides a good agreement with the experimental deformation modulus of PCB mixtures, thereby indicating its reliability.
