Abstract

The rapid increases in usage of natural resources are becoming as major concerned. Thus, to lead for more sustainable in construction industry, the concrete is produced from recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). One of the potentially used of RCA is in application as filter medium in biological aerated filter system for enhancing the removal of phosphorus from domestic wastewater. Phosphorus is one of the culprit nutrient as they could cause eutrophication in which excessive growth of organisms such as algae will decrease the soluble oxygen concentration in waters, causing detrimental effects on the aquatic life even at an increase in phosphorus as low as 0.1 mg/L. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the capability of RCA as a filter medium develops in low-cost filter system for the purpose of enhancing phosphorus removal from domestic wastewater and would be able to produce effluent which complies to the Environmental Quality Act (Sewage) Regulations 2009. In a preliminary study, RCA was found as a highly potential media to be used in designed vertical aerated system for greatly removal of phosphorus. This study involves three major experiments: (1) batch experiments for investigation of the RCA capability as a filter medium in removing phosphorus ; (2) optimization study of the operational condition of the lab-scale aerated recycled concrete aggregate filter (ARCAF) system (3) comparison of designed ARCAF, aerated steel slag and limestone filter in phosphorus removal. Laboratory analysis of ARCAF influent and effluent samples will be conducted for selected parameters including BOD, COD, total phosphorus, DO and pH to monitor the system performance. Chemical composition of RCA, steel slag and limestone will be examined through XRF analysis. It is expected that the ARCAF has a promising potential filter media for enhancing a phosphorus removal in a wastewater treatment system.
