Abstract

The presence of water in asphalt pavement can cause adhesive failure at the binder aggregate interface and cohesion failure in the binder filler mastic. The continuous action of weakening due to moisture and mechanical damage due to traffic loads can cause progressive aggregate loosening, weakening the aggregate-mastic bond and is known as pavement surface stripping. This paper investigates the moisture performances of FAG asphalt mixture incorporating basalt aggregate. The asphalt mixture was created using a dry process procedure and HMA conventional asphalt binder 60/70 was used with different FAG percentages as level of 3%, 5%, 7% and 9% of the total asphalt binder. A nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) of 14 mm was employed to determine optimum bitumen content and tensile strength characteristic according to AASHTO T283. The design asphalt binder of the specimen according to AC14 mixes were obtained in range 5.05 to 5.85%. The results showed that the addition of 9% fly ash geopolymer in asphalt mixture conditioned for wet and dry conditions showed the highest tensile strength at 1520.21 kPa and 1298.22 kPa, respectively. This is due to the highest value of wet ITS compared to dry specimens. It can be concluded that the asphalt mixture prepared with various percentages of fly ash geopolymer complies with the standard specification of Tensile strength ratio (TSR) and show good potential for moisture damage resistance.
