Abstract

In Malaysia, private vehicles are the main mode of transports which witnessed an increase in registered vehicles from 97,262 in 1980 to 284,461 in the year of 2016 [1] As the population grows and there are many vehicles on the roads, accidents and road-related deaths have increased. Approximately 18 traffic accidents occur every day in the Peninsular Malaysia which means that on average there is almost one death at every hour. The report from Bukit Aman’s Head of the Traffic Police shows that of daily death average caused by road accident in Malaysia is 19 people [2]. It shows that there is a high rate of accident if compared to the total population in Malaysia. Based on Figure 1.1, most cases of road accident cases in Malaysia have risen from 2013 to 2016 but declined in 2017. Malacca and Federal Territories have the same number of road accident deaths from 2013 to 2017. The amount recorded is only in the case of 100-300 cases only. In Sabah and Sarawak, the number of deaths due to road accidents is quite flat in 2013 and 2014 of 420 cases but decreased by 2015 to 2017. The state of Johor and Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths due to road accidents from 2013 to 2017 (Figure 1.1). This alarming situation needs to be inhibited to circumvent the immense economic loss and save lives.
