Abstract

Recently, the use of nanofluidsas heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics in microchannel heat sinkhas gained strong interest.In this study, the microchannel was design with a cross section of 0.5 × 0.5 mm2 and made by copper. The experiment was conducted in laminar flow with Reynolds number ranging approximatelyfrom 633 to 1172. The performance of Al2O3nanofluids in the microchannel is evaluated in terms of heat transfer.The present study was focused on heat transfer of Al2O3nanofluids in microchannel heat sink at concentration of 1.0 wt. % and 2.5 wt. % dispersed in water. The experimental was set up for laminar flow in a square microchannel. The heat was produced at bottom of the heat sink at 325 W. The computational simulation methods was carried out and validated with the experimental results. It was observed that the heat transfer rate is higher when using Al2O3nanofluids compared to water. However, there was lack of study about effects of the Al2O3nanofluids after used in the microchannel. Therefore, the structure of Al2O3particles was characterized using X-ray diffraction method (XRD). It is found that the structure of Al2O3particles tends to more integrity and the crystallite size grows up after increased the temperature in the microchannel.
